Mitte is a central locality (Ortsteil) of Berlin in the homonymous district (Bezirk) of Mitte. Until 2001 it was itself an autonomous district.
It is the seat of the berliner city hall (Rotes Rathaus) and of the main tourist attractions of the city. Due to this reasons Mitte is considered the heart of Berlin.

[edit] History
Due to its position, the history of Mitte corresponds to the history of the entire city until the early 20th century and with the Greater Berlin Act in 1920 it became the first district of the city. During the World War II it was one of the most damaged areas of the city.
During the period 1961-1990 Mitte, one of the most important boroughs of East Berlin but mainly close to the western sector of the city, was surrounded by Berlin Wall. One of the most important borders was the Checkpoint Charlie, nearby Kreuzberg.
