Category:Astronauts by nationality
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first nation to send a man into space, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, called their spacemen "cosmonauts", and nations within the Soviet sphere of influence followed suit. For political reasons, different nations have used different terminology to refer to their citizens in space. The United States and its allies use the term "astronaut", and Francophone countries often use "spationaut". "Taikonaut" is occasionally used when referring to the Chinese space program, but the Chinese government uses "astronaut" in official English-language documents.
