Derek James O'Brien (born January 11, 1963 in Hartford, Connecticut) is a drummer and producer who has been involved with many bands and projects throughout his career.

He may be best-known for having been the first consistent drummer for Social Distortion (1981 - 1984). He left Social Distortion on New Year's Eve, 1984, along with bassist Brent Liles. Liles and O'Brien would again be bandmates from 1989 to the early 1990s with Agent Orange. Presently, he is the drummer for The Adolescents.

Some other bands/projects that O'Brien has been involved in over the course of his career include Punk Rock Karaoke, Extra Fancy, making orange juice at home,The Foes and D.I..

He attended UCLA for a degree in recording engineering. He appeared in the film Another State of Mind (1984). His favorite animals are whales, his favorite food is butter cookies, and his favorite number is 90.
