European Commissioner for Science & Research

The European Commissioner for Science and Research is a portfolio within the European Commission. The current commissioner is Janez Potočnik (independent).
The portfolio is responsible primarily for research and improving the conditions in the Union for researchers. The post is known familiarly as Science and Research; however it involves other fields such as technology, development etc.

Commissioner Potočnik was approved by the European Parliament in 2004 as Commissioner for Science and Research. Although the designation had been expanded from simply Commissioner for Research of the Prodi Commission, its duties remained essentially the same. The main Directorate-General (DG) is still simply "research" (DG for Research). Potočnik is one of the few commissioners under President Barroso not attached to a political party.
Potočnik has stated that he believes trading knowledge and the development of an information society to create prosperity is as important to Europe as trading steel and coal to create peace was 50 years ago. He aims to develop the European Research Area. [1]
