Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia is a member church of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). The seat of the church is in Eisenach. The church covers those parts of the state of Thuringia that were not part of the former Province of Saxony. It's the largest Protestant denomination in this area.
The church is also a full member of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) and the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe. It is based on the teachings brought forward by Martin Luther during the Reformation.
The church has approx. 43,604 parishioners (in December 2005) in 1,308 church parishes. There is no cathedral church.
The church has its own academy in Neudietendorf.
Since July 1, 2004, the church is on the way to form with the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony a unit church, the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, on January 1, 2009.
The state bishop is Christoph Kähler (2008).
