Gary Plumley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gary Plumley (born 24 March 1956 in Birmingham) is an English former professional footballer. A goalkeeper, he made 187 appearances for Newport County in four spells with the club between 1976 and 1987, particulary during the most successful period in the clubs long history. Plumley was part of the team that won promotion and the Welsh Cup and in the subsequent season reached the quarter-final of the 1981 European Cup Winners Cup [1].
Plumley also played for Cardiff City and Ebbw Vale F.C..
Unusual circumstances led to Plumley making a one-off appearance in the 1987 FA Cup Semi-final between Watford and Tottenham Hotspur.
Watford goalkeeper Tony Coton suffered a broken finger two weeks before the game so manager Graham Taylor needed to find cover for goalkeeper Steve Sherwood outside of the transfer window.
In desperation, Taylor went to see Watford chief executive Eddie Plumley and asked to sign his son Gary, 31, who had just retired from football and was working in his wine bar Roman's in Caerleon, Newport. Sherwood was subsequently injured so Plumley was thrust straight into the team. Tottenham won the match 4-1.
Plumley currently runs his own estate agency business in Newport.
