Hải Dương Hai Duong.ogg pronunciation is a city in Vietnam. It is the capital of Hải Dương Province. Its name is Sino-Vietnamese for “ocean” ().

Hải Dương city is bounded to the north and east by Nam Sách District and Thanh Ha district. The Cai River (literally, “mother river” in Vietnamese) devides the city into 2 parts, one is urban area, one is rural and industrial outskirts. It is also bounded to the west by Cam Giang district, and to the south by Gia Lộc and Tứ Kỳ districts, with a branch of the Sat River. It is located in the centre of the Northern Economic Area and of the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh development region, too. Hai Duong is 58km far from Hanoi, 45km far from Haiphong, and 80km far from Halong Bay. The province has railway, National Highway No.5 (Hanoi - Hai Duong - Haiphong) and National Highway No.18 (Bac Ninh - Hai Duong - Quang Ninh). Hai Duong is a province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. It is bordered by Haiphong, Quang Ninh province in the east, Hung Yen in the west, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang in the north, and Thai Binh in the south.

With total 1.648km2 area, Hai Duong is known as a large region has one big city (Hai Duong) and eleven districts (Binh Giang, Cam Giang, Chi Linh, Gia Loc, Kim Thanh, Kinh Mon, Nam Sach, Ninh Giang, Thanh Ha, Thanh Mien and Tu Ky).

Hải Dương city was built from 1804, and was first called “Thành Đông,” referring to the citadel to the east of Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi. During the French colonial period, Hải Dương was a town. Before 1968, Hải Dương was still a town of Hải Dương Province, and from 1968 to 1996 was a town of Hai Hung Province, because Hai Hung Province was merged Province of Hải Dương and Hung Yen Province at that time. On November 6, 1996, Hải Dương became the capital of Hải Dương Province as had been before. On August 6, 1997, the city of Hải Dương was established.

Hải Dương city includes 13 wards (urban areas) and 6 communes (rural areas).
