[edit] History

Before partition of British India, Liaquatabad was known as Laloo Khet, however this name is still in vogue. At that time, the area was a suburb and out of city center and had agricultural fields owned by a local resident Lal Buksh alias Laloo. As the population spread, the fields (khet) of Laloo turned into residential area. In late 1940's and 1950s, Muslim diaspora (muhajir) from northern India settled here and made it their domicile.

The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier. The effect in Karachi was the dissolution of the former Karachi Division and the merger of its five districts to form a new Karachi City-District with eighteen autonomous constituent towns including Liaquatabad Town.
