Former Primary State Highways

Three systems of numbered highways are present in the U.S. state of Washington: the Interstate Highway System, the U.S. Numbered Highways, and the Washington state route system. The Interstate Highway System and U.S. Highway System are nationwide systems with a subset of the highways passing through Washington. All numbered highways in Washington are maintained by the Washington State Department of Transportation, commonly known as WSDOT. There are currently 771.83 miles (1,242.14 km) of Interstate in Washington and 1,821.85 miles (2,931.98 km) of U.S. highways in Washington, which combines to make 2,593.68 miles (4,174.12 km) of numbered highways in Washington.[1][2]

WSDOT, established as the Washington State Highway Board and the Washington State Highways Department, created the first system of numbered roads in Washington in 1923, with the establishment of the State Road system. When the U.S. highway system was established in 1926, many U.S. highways were co-signed with the existing state roads.[3] Later in 1937, another system, the Primary state highways and Secondary state highways took effect and increased the number of state-maintained roads in Washington.[4] A new system, the current State Route system, took effect in 1964, shortly after the creation of the Interstate Highway System.[5][6]

The Interstate highway with the longest segment in Washington is I-90,[7] at 296.92 miles (477.85 km), and the Interstate highway with the shortest segment in Washington is I-705,[8] at 1.50 miles (2.41 km). The U.S. highway with the longest segment in Washington is U.S. Route 12,[9] at 430.80 miles (693.31 km), and the U.S. highway with the shortest segment in Washington is U.S. Route 197,[10] at 3.18 miles (5.12 km). The longest Washington state highway is Washington State Route 20,[11] at 436.12 miles (701.87 km), and the shortest Washington state highway is Washington State Route 433[12] at 0.94 miles (1.51 km).[1][13][2]

Several former U.S. highways previously existed in Washington: U.S. Route 10, U.S. Route 95, U.S. Route 99, U.S. Route 295, U.S. Route 410, and U.S. Route 830.[14]

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ Interstate 82's number is a violation of the Interstate numbering scheme because at the time when I-82 was built, I-84 was known as I-80N, and when the AASHTO wanted to renumber suffixed Interstates, I-80N became I-84.
  2. ^ I-82 was originally intended to go west from Yakima to Chinook Pass and north to Tacoma.
  3. ^ US 395 originally ran from US 10 and US 195 in Spokane to Hwy 395 at the Canadian border. When US 395 was extended to Oregon in the 1930's, US 395 was co-signed with US 410 (today known as US 12 to Wallula where US 395 followed US 730 into Oregon. US 395 was moved to its current route in 1985, after the construction of I-82.
  4. ^ In the original 1926 plan, US 197 continued from SR 14 (then known as US 830) east to US 97 near Maryhill.
  5. ^ US 730 was co-signed with US 395 for its whole portion in Washington from the 1930's to 1985, when US 395 was moved to I-82.
  6. ^ US 10 went along the route of SR 900 from 1926 to 1940. When the Lake Washington Floating Bridge opened in 1940, US 10 was rerouted on the bridge. US 10 has been largely replaced by I-90.
  7. ^ US 295 has been replaced by SR 127 and a portion of SR 26.
  8. ^ US 410 has been replaced by US 12, SR 8, US 101, I-5, SR 167, SR 410, and US 12.
  9. ^ US 830 has been replaced by SR 4, I-5, and SR 14.
  10. ^ US 95 has been replaced by US 195 and US 195 Spur.
  11. ^ US 99 has been largely replaced by I-5.
