List of tallest buildings in New Orleans
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This list of tallest buildings in New Orleans ranks skyscrapers in the U.S. city of New Orleans, Louisiana by height. The tallest building in the city is One Shell Square, which rises 697 feet (212 m) in the New Orleans Central Business District and was completed in 1972.[1] It also stands as the tallest building in the state of Louisiana. The second-tallest skyscraper in the city is Place St. Charles, which rises 645 feet (197 m).[2] Nine of the ten tallest buildings in Louisiana are located in New Orleans.
The history of skyscrapers in New Orleans began with the construction of the Latter & Blum Building in 1895; this building, rising 158 feet (48 m),[3] is often regarded as the first skyscraper in New Orleans.[4] The 20-story Hibernia Bank Building, constructed in 1921 at a height of 211 feet (64 m), held the title of the tallest in New Orleans for 44 years.[5] But, for most of the 20th century, the skyline of New Orleans consisted of only low and mid-rise structures. The soft soils of New Orleans are susceptible to subsidence,[6] and there was doubt about the feasibility of constructing large high-rises in such an environment. This trend was broken with the construction of the World Trade Center New Orleans in 1967. The Plaza Tower, completed in 1969, was the first building to exceed 500 feet (152 m).[7][8] Shortly thereafter, One Shell Square took its place as the city's tallest building in 1972.[1] The oil boom of the early 1980s led to more construction of high-rises in New Orleans, with the development of the Poydras Street corridor and completion of 17 of the city's 40 tallest buildings. Today, the high-rises of New Orleans are clustered along Canal Street and Poydras Street in the Central Business District. Overall, the skyline of New Orleans is ranked (based on existing and under construction buildings over 500 feet (152 m) tall) sixth in the Southern United States (after Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte) and 20th in the United States.[A]
As New Orleans continues to recover from Hurricane Katrina, various projects have been proposed but increasing material and labor costs have eliminated some.[9][10] The tallest tower approved for construction in the city is Trump International Hotel & Tower, which is scheduled to break ground in the summer of 2008; upon completion in 2009, it would become the tallest building in New Orleans at a height of 842 feet (257 m).[11] While not new constructions, many of the older buildings in the Central Business District are undergoing renovations to condominium, apartment and hotel towers; these projects include the Crescent City Residences and National American Bank Building.[9] Other proposed skyscrapers include Phase 3 of Canal Place, 930 Poydras, and a variety of condominium towers in undeveloped lots between Poydras, South Rampart, Julia, and O'Keefe Streets.
