[edit] Dedemsvaart

Dedemsvaart ("Dedem's Canal") is a village with a population of about 12,000. It is located along an old canal, the Dedemsvaart proper, which lost its commercial importance after WWII. The area around Dedemsvaart, until 2001 part of the municipality of Avereest was important for industrialisation. Baron Willem Jan of Dedem, after whom canal and town were named, made a plan to dig a canal; construction began on July 9, 1809. Around two years later, in 1811, the canal had already reached Balkbrug. In 1845 the project got into financial trouble and the Baron had to forfeit the canal of Dedemsvaart, until then a private possession, to the province of Overijssel, who took further care of the canal. Over the years the canal changed and eventually became unfit for commercial use. Dedemsvaart proper lies near the N377 between Balkbrug and Lutten. The municipality of Avereest was disbanded in 2001 and became part of the municipality of Hardenberg.

[edit] Gramsbergen

Gramsbergen lies on the N34 (Zwolle - Emmen), the Zwolle - Emmen railway and the Almelo - de Haandrik canal. Gramsbergen is a small town on the river de Vecht and became part of the municipality Hardenberg on January 1, 2001. Formerly Gramsbergen community comprised the centres Gramsbergen and De Krim and the hamlets Ane, Anevelde, Anerveen, Den Velde, Holthone, Holtheme and Loozen.

[edit] Early history

Gramsbergen and its hamlets have been inhabited since pre-historic times. In the 'Cultuur Historisch Informatie Centrum Vechtdal' (The Historical and Cultural Center of Vechtdal), in the centre of Gramsbergen, several archaeological artifacts are exhibited. These artifacts come from settlements from around 8000BC.

Generally it is assumed that the village of Gramsbergen already existed in the 13th century. In the books from the period before, the name Gramsbergen is already mentioned. It received city rights in 1442.
