Salvatore Bocchetti (born 30 November 1986 in Napoli) is an Italian footballer who plays as a defender for Serie A club Genoa. Bocchetti is not a tall defender but is similar to Fabio Cannavaro in that he compensates with excellent timing a spectacular leap for headers. Although becoming well known for his strong tackling and no-nonsense style of defending, Bocchetti possesses a cultured left foot and lung bursting energy which enables him to perform as a maurading left back as well as his favoured role as centre back.
[edit] Club career
Bocchetti started his professional career at Ascoli. He made his Serie A debut against Palermo on 20 December 2006. He was on loan to Serie C1 for Lanciano, and Frosinone of Serie B on second half of 2006-07 season. In the 2008-09 season Bocchetti has been signed by Genoa CFC and has become a regular starter in central defence.
[edit] International career
In 2008 Bocchetti made his debut with the Italy U-21 squad. He impressed during the 2008 Toulon Tournament, playing 4 matches. Bocchetti proved to be a reliable and solid centre back during the tournament and moved ahead of Domenico Criscito, Marco Andreolli and Lino Marzoratti to become a first choice. Bocchetti retained his place in the starting line up for the 2008 Olympics and had a great tournament putting himself firmly in the mind of Marcello Lippi, the national coach.
On March 22, 2009, Bocchetti received his first call to the senior Italy squad by Marcello Lippi for the European Championship qualifiers against Montenegro and Ireland.
