The Cremorne, Sheffield

The Cremorne is a public house on London Road in Sheffield, England. The pub, located in the Highfield area of the city, dates from the nineteenth century, possibly as early as 1833.
The origin of the name is under debate. One theory is that the name comes from the Cremorne Gardens, which were apparently at Mount Pleasant on the junction of London Road and Sharrow Lane. The gardens were reputedly the scene of many community events, including a circus, and hot air balloon spectaculars. This may explain the presence of a balloon on the painted sign that hangs above the door of the pub. The gardens in turn took their name from the Cremorne Gardens, London.
Another theory is that the pub is named after the winner of the 1872 Derby, but this would mean the pub's name must have changed to The Cremorne at that time, raising the question of what its original name may have been. What is more likely is that the name of the horse shares its origins with the name of the pub.
The Cremorne is 300 metres from Bramall Lane, home of Sheffield United Football Club. It is a popular venue on matchdays.
The Cremorne also features in the background of the Arctic Monkeys music video for 'Leave before the lights come on'.
