The specific phrase 'The Germanies' in history texts, historic references and diplomatic contexts almost universally in references (until the latter decades) of the 20th century almost always referred to the many disunited principalities of the Holy Roman Empire before the emergence of Modern German nation states the past two centuries — that is the term was used after the close of the Napoleonic War upto circa 1871 when Germany unification under one government and head of state as an empire became a fact.
