[edit] Private life
The son of José A. Rivera "Nia", a former mayor of the municipality of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. Rivera-Schatz' mother is of German-ancestry. He served as a legislative adviser and an assistant District Attorney after graduating from law school. In 1994, he married Katherine Urbina with whom he resides in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
[edit] Political career
Rivera-Schatz served as the New Progressive Party's electoral commissioner before the Puerto Rico State Elections Commission. During the 2004 elections he described himself as a "statehood militant," and was an integral part of the NPP's effort to invalidate the results of the 2004 elections, which, as confirmed by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico , declared Aníbal Acevedo Vilá as winner over former Governor Pedro Rosselló González.
After the 2004 elections, he replaced NPP Secretary General María Milagros Charbonier Laureano, and became the new Secretary General of the NPP.
Some pro-statehood hard-liners feel sympathy for Rivera Schatz, while most people feel his style and unconditional loyalty to former party president Pedro Rosselló's aspirations damaged his party's image and structure.
[edit] President of the Senate
On November 7, 2008, Rivera Schatz was selected by the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico's senators-elect to become the Fourteenth President of the Senate of Puerto Rico on January 12, 2009.[1]
Soon thereafter, on November 26, he announced the members of his leadership team. Sen. Margarita Nolasco, Sen. Roberto Arango and Sen. Larry Seilhamer were announced as Mayority Leaders. He also that former PDP House Majority Leader Roberto "Junior" Maldonado would serve as Chief Administrative Officer of the Senate, McClintock's right-hand man, Senate Secretary Manuel A. Torres, would be reelected and that incumbent Superintendent of the State Capitol, Eliezer Velázquez, first time ever for a Superintendent, will remain in his post on January 12, 2009.[2]
