Tom Hiariej (pronounced /hiɑriːeɪ/;[clarification needed][where's the stress?] (born 25 September 1988), Winschoten) is a Dutch footballer who currently plays for FC Groningen, where he started his career. The talented defender was chosen to play for the first team, by Groningen-coach, Ron Jans.
Hiariej is not only FC Groningen squad-player, but also youth international. He played a bunch of matches for several youth teams. He was also part of the Dutch U-17 team, who ended up third in the World Cup for Under 17 in Peru in 2005.
Netherlands U-17 coach, Ruud Kaiser was very impressed by the young defender. Before the youth FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, Kaiser said this about Hiariej:
"When Hiariej plays for his club, he plays central defender, but here he plays right-back. He is talented and quick. He also has the quality's to come up in attack; he sees the chances"[1]
In the match against NEC Nijmegen (23 January, 2008), Tom Hiariej scored his first top-flight goal for FC Groningen.
