Tubridy Tonight was a television chat show broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ One. The show was hosted by Ryan Tubridy and was broadcast live on Saturday nights after the RTÉ News and Weather. [3] The show began broadcasting on October 16, 2004 for a ten-week run and was extended by a further thirteen shows until April 2005.

Tubridy Tonight had regular viewing figures of 450,000.[4] However, the show also regularly fell victim to so-called "Saturday Night Syndrome", with The Late Late Show, broadcast on Friday nights on the same channel, frequently featuring supposedly better guests.[4]

In the fifth and final season, guests included actor Aidan Quinn, Don Baker, Nob Nation's Oliver Callan, [5] Gráinne and Síle Seoige, Peaches Geldof, Anna Faris, [6] Johnny Logan, Jackie Collins, [7] Fall Out Boy [8], The Saturdays, [9] Mike Murphy, [10] Sugababes, Eoin Colfer, [11] Richard Attenborough, Zig and Zag, [12] Pádraig Harrington, John Slattery, [13] Dara O'Briain, [14] Take That, [15] Gok Wan, [16] Neil Delamere, The Script[17] and Amanda Brunker,[18] Roger Moore, [19] William Shatner,[20] Mark Pollock,[21] Liam Neeson,[22] Bernard Dunne (before and after his super bantamweight win),[23][24] the trio of Amy Huberman, Dara Ó Cinnéide and Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin,[25] jockey Ruby Walsh and broadcaster David Attenborough,[26] Michael Sheen,[27] and Pat Shortt, Paul Howard and Lorraine Keane[28] and Erin O'Connor alongside model agent Ellis,[29] Paul Gascoigne[30] Fern Britton and Stephen Fry,[31] Colm Meaney[32] and Spandau Ballet.[33]. On 11th May 2009, it was announced that Tubridy Tonight would be scrapped at the end of its current run as Ryan Tubridy is to take over the hosting of The Late Late Show He said it had been "quite the odyssey".[34]

[edit] Format

Ryan Tubridy (pictured smiling at desk with glass of water) modelled his first chat show on the style of shows presented by US entertainers such as David Letterman and Conan O'Brien.

Tubridy Tonight was in RTÉ One's Saturday night slot from 2004 to 2009, having succeeded Kenny Live upon its demise in 1999. [35] The show had an American-style feel about it [36] with a house band, the Camembert Quartet, providing the theme music and introductory pieces befitting the guests. [37] Similar to American chat shows Tubridy Tonight had no opening titles and borrows its informal bantering style from US entertainers such as David Letterman and Conan O'Brien.[38] The studio was revamped for series five in 2008, with the addition of a staircase used by guests and a platform for the house band, although the library theme remained intact. [39] The show followed a simple format. There were usually three interviewees as well as a musical guest. Tubridy may also have conducted a quiz or a game at his leisure with a member of the studio audience, an example being a game of charades based on the Academy Awards, [40] and there also may have been a competition which, upon the show's imminent endage, consisted of a live call to a viewer who may or may not win a prize.

[edit] History

The Tubridy Tonight logo (2004–2008)

Tubridy Tonight is well-known for having conducted the last live television interview [41] with model and socialite, Katy French only two weeks before her death [42] in suspicious circumstances. [43] The interview took place on November 24, 2007 [44] during the fourth season of the chat show. In 2008, it featured a live fight between chefs Kevin Dundon and Dylan McGrath over their styles of cooking; the duo were on the show to promote Guerrilla Gourmet.[45] On March 1, 2008, Tubridy Tonight saw the first Irish television interview with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová following their Academy Award-winning show the previous month. Hansard's mother brought the award to display to the nation. [46] In February 2009, the show was subject to a hate campaign on social networking site Facebook.[47]

[edit] Praise and competition

A poll found that, within five months of Tubridy Tonight going on air, 38 per cent of adults preferred Tubridy on television, compared with 40 per cent opting for his main rival, Pat Kenny. Tubridy Tonight and its host have also won praise [142] from the former host of The Late Late Show, Gay Byrne. The show competes for guests with The Late Late Show. This has led to some criticism and ponderings as to why Tubridy is left with substandard "dull" guests that do not befit his talent. [143] Some guests have opted[citation needed] to be interviewed by Tubridy instead of appearing on Kenny's Late Late Show. The competition between the two chat shows is analogous to similar competition in a previous decade between Byrne and Kenny.

[edit] Guest survey

A survey by The Times revealed that nearly one fifth of guests on RTÉ chat shows including Tubridy Tonight are RTÉ employees and associates. The survey did not include musical acts.[144]
