Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
| This is a WikiProject, a collaboration area and open group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of a particular topic, or to organizing some internal Wikipedia process. Please see the Guide to WikiProjects and the Directory of WikiProjects for more information. |
Welcome to WikiProject Sports. Some have formed this collaboration resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of sports, including the organization of information and articles on this topic area. This page and its subpages contain suggestions and various resources, including article assessment information, that we hope help focus the efforts of other Wikipedians to improve all sport related articles in order to make Wikipedia an excellent resource for sports-related information for all who visit. And we are here to point editors in the right direction to get involved in child projects that focus on their more particular sporting interests. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page, join the project, and see the to-do list below.

[edit] Scope
This WikiProject aims primarily to:
- Describe how sporting-related articles should be represented and what information belongs in the articles
- Provide a central location for coordinating and organizing sports articles and their features
- Serve as an article assessment group, helping move articles closer and closer to Featured Article status
- Foster sports article creation and improvement
- Creation of useful Wikipedia templates for use in sports articles – navigation boxes, stub tags, infoboxes, etc.
- Out of scope: board games, table top games, video games (even sports simulation ones) and other games of a non-sporting character; for such pastimes, please see WikiProject Games and its child projects.
- Also out of scope are individual athletes. These should be under the person's relevant sports Wikiproject

[edit] Article assessment
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Any member of WikiProject Sports may assess Sports-related articles by following the guidelines below. If you aren't sure about an article, ask about it on the assessment page.
The {{WikiProject Sports}} template has a class= and an importance= parameter which provide an article assessment and importance rating for each article:
- {{WikiProject Sports|class=???|importance=???}}
The following values may be used for the class parameter. Please note that you must type them exactly as below as they are case-sensitive:
- FA (adds articles to Category:FA-Class sports articles)
- A (adds articles to Category:A-Class sports articles)
- GA (adds articles to Category:GA-Class sports articles)
- B (adds articles to Category:B-Class sports articles)
- Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class sports articles)
- Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class sports articles)
- NA (for pages where assessment is unnecessary, such as templates; adds items to Category:Non-article sports pages)
If a rating is not assigned, the article will be filed in Category:Unassessed sports articles. The class should be assigned according to the grading scheme. A list of Unassessed and In dispute articles can be discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports/Assessment.
The following values may be used for the importance parameter. Please note that you must type them exactly as below as they are case-sensitive:
- Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance sports articles)
- High (adds articles to Category:High-importance sports articles)
- Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance sports articles)
- Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance sports articles)
- Unknown (adds articles to Category:Unknown-importance sports articles)
The parameter is not used if an article's class is set to NA, and may be omitted in those cases.

Talk Tags an article or other page (on its talk page, not in the article itself) as being within the scope of the project. Should not be used for articles that already have a more specific sports WikiProject tag, unless their tag does not support assessments and you are assessing the article. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

[edit] Structure
There shall be an alphabetical list of all sports. There shall also be an organization of sports by categories. There shall be a listing of sport competitions, that involve multiple sports (e.g. the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, the Maccabiah Games, the Good Will Games, etc.) -- competitions for particular sports, or groups of sports, would be better located on the page for that sport. The lists of competitions should be organized along the lines of what area of the world they involve -- i.e. are they global (e.g. the Olympics), restricted to a particular region of the world (Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa, etc.), or restricted to a particular country (in which case, they could be placed under a section on the sport in that particular country.) These lists shall be either on the main Sports page, or if they become too long on separate pages linked to by the main page.
Suggested Topics:
- information on sport in general (what is a sport?, why do people play sports?, what are the benefits of sport?)
- information on particular sports (Wikiproject Sports Listing)
- information on sporting competitions, clubs, events (incl. the Olympic Games)
- famous Sportspeople
- sports ethics, drugs in sport, cheating
- related areas: sports law, sports medicine
- sporting history
[edit] Historical and annual summaries
The purpose of these articles (e.g., History of baseball, 2009 in sports) is to summarise significant events that are relevant to the sport or period under review. It is very important that the articles are not encumbered by excessive detail, particularly where a certain theme is being promoted. This is in accordance with general Wikipedia guidelines and policies such as WP:NOT#STATS, WP:UNDUEWEIGHT and WP:NOTDIRECTORY.
For that reason, the project has decided to exclude lists of births and deaths. Births have no conceivable importance to sports in the year of the person's birth, no matter how famous the person might become a generation hence. Deaths of active sportspersons are significant but must be recorded under a section about the relevant sport or the relevant time period.
[edit] History of sports: category
Articles that cover a sport's general history must be categorised in Category:History of sports and a category specific to the history of that sport. Histories of specific events in a sport or covering a limited period only must not be categorised in the sports history category.
Currently, there are relatively few general histories about individual sports and most sports have their histories within the sport's own article (e.g., the history of boxing is in the main boxing article, whereas baseball has a history of baseball article). Until such time as a general history of the sport can be created, the main article must be included in the sports history category.
[edit] Hierarchy definition
No classification of Sports has been defined.
However:
- Category:Sports and its subcategories provide a heirarchical view of the sports articles and their categorization
- WikiProject Council/Directory/Culture/Sports provides a somewhat heirarchical view of sports-related WikiProjects
